-With each molt, the millipede gets a new segment and 2 pairs of legs. They stop once they reach full size. -The word "millipede" comes from Latin roots milli ("thousand") and ped ("foot"). These creatures do not have a thousand legs, although the rare species Illacme plenipes have up to 750 . The common species have between 36 and 400 legs. -Their short legs make them slow, but they are great burrowers. -Their length of live varies, but the average age is 5-6 years.
